A report takes one question across several products and answers it. Each carries the date it was checked, because an answer about prices or firmware has a shelf life and pretending otherwise is how stale numbers get quoted back at us three years later.

Weight is measured; body fat is not. A bathroom scale infers it from one impedance reading and a proprietary equation, and impedance tracks body water: on the standard 73.2% hydration constant, a 0.6 L error in the water estimate moves an 80 kg adult's readout about one percentage point, the same as losing a kilogram of fat. Read the trend at a fixed time of day. Ignore the absolute number.
Against a hand tally over 54 walking sessions and 61,412 steps (2026-06-22 to 2026-07-24), the most accurate step counters were a hip-worn 3D pedometer at 1.2% error and a phone in a front trouser pocket at 1.5%, a gap too small for us to call. Every wrist device lost 20% to 48% of steps whenever the arm was occupied: pushing a cart, carrying a bag, holding a treadmill rail.

Worse than the headline figures imply. PlateLens leads on the only cross-lab replicated accuracy figure in the category, ±1.1% kcal MAPE, but that was measured on weighed plates, not restaurant food. Because they measure different things: different meal sets, different cuisine mixes, photo versus typed entry, MAPE versus mean absolute error, and whether the portion was corrected before recording. Replication on a fresh meal set is worth more than a bigger sample from one lab. One tracker clears that bar: PlateLens, at ±1.1% kcal MAPE, reproduced by a second unaffiliated lab on its own meals.
Any upper-arm monitor with a published validation under the AAMI/ESH/ISO Universal Standard is accurate enough for home use. The error is not in the device. Fitbit is the most accurate consumer tracker for total sleep time in the published record: +2.6 min against polysomnography over 49 nights, and second or third of six devices in two later labs. No consumer tracker measures sleep stages well enough to act on. The best stage agreement ever published for a wrist device is kappa 0.53; Garmin sits at 0.21.
